Take a Seat is an invitation for peace and connection, using design as the way in.
Open to everyone and free to attend, the monthly afternoon centres on a different designer or artist every time.
Split into two halves, it’s a space for slowing down, seeing a new piece of art, and meeting new people.
Part I: We sit
With an object in the middle of us, the session will start with 45 minutes of sitting together. We’ll start in silence, and what happens after that will be up to those in the room.
There’s no obligation to say or do anything - but if you want to respond to the work this is welcome. Maybe there’ll be a conversation, maybe we’ll sit together in silence - each month will be different.
Part II: We hang out
Once the 45 minutes of sitting together is over, we’ll serve some tea and fruit for anyone who wants to stick around and chat. Nothing specific, just a space to carry on conversations, talk about what you’ve seen and heard, and perhaps meet someone new.
Why are we doing this?
Take a Seat comes from a yearning for more peace, beauty and connection. We are digitally distracted and disconnected, often not able to see each other or the world around us as the world spins faster.
Many of us seem to be looking for places where we can slow down, get off our phones and be together in real life.
We believe beautiful spaces and objects have the power to provoke a softness and connectivity between people - and Take a Seat is a place to enjoy that feeling together.
What to expect
Each month we will sit with a different piece of art or design - this could be a sculpture, a painting, or even a household item that deserves a closer look.
There will be 25 seats per session. It’s free to come along, you just need to register so we know how many people to expect. You are welcome to come alone and don’t need to know anyone, but friends are welcome too.
We’ll start Part I in silence to allow ourselves to settle in and slow down. Sitting in silence can feel difficult or strange to begin with - you can bring something to read or draw if you would like.
This is an event with no pressure or expectations. There’s no need to know anything about art or design - this is about creating an open and calming space, and seeing what happens when people sit together, being conscious of each other and the object that's with us.
If you have any questions - please send us a message.
